The grocery chain said stores in Leesburg, Dulles, Potomac, Lake Manassas, Virginia Beach, and Charlottesville would stop using the bags beginning on July 1. Wegmans in Fairfax and Richmond counties have already phased out single-use plastic bags.
Customers can purchase paper bags for 5 cents each or bring reusable bags for their groceries. The company said it would donate any money generated from the sale of paper bags to local food banks, the company said. Reuseable bags will also be available for purchase.
The company has stopped allowing single-use plastic grocery bags at many of its stores. Wegmans plans to phase out the bags at its 27 remaining locations in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts by the end of the year.
Wegmans announced this plan in April. The move is part of the 107-store chain's push to reduce single-use plastic waste. The company said it's committed to decreasing the amount of in-store plastic packaging made from fossil fuels and other single-use plastics.
